Blending many years of ceremonial and musical experience with techniques acquired over eighteen years as a teacher of adults, Chris resourcefully shapes his students' discovery of the rich beauty and complexity of Cuban traditions.
Originally inspired to play drums after working as a volunteer in the Caribbean in 1983, Chris Waker was quickly drawn to Cuban music, and had the great fortune of studying and playing with the best musicians of this genre, both in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Cuba. Throughout the 90's he played with bands and folklore troupes in Canada, Mexico, Morocco and the SF Bay Area, and accompanied and directed music for many of the most notable Cuban dance teachers in the U.S. Chris is an active instrument maker, and many players of Cuban music own cajónes, guiros, guaguas, and chaguorós of his construction.
He has recently appeared in "Mosaico," "Tribute to Judith Jústiz," and the Colorado Dance Festival, and devotes much of his attention to playing Santería ceremonies with Pedro de Jésus and Carlos Aldama. His performance credits span 19 years, and include domestic and international festivals and events in Canada, Mexico, North Africa, and the United States, and numerous CDs and videos.

Hassania imparts classes in Afro-Arabic Dance, which include a range of dances from North Africa and the Gulf States, including Guedra, Gnawa, Shikat, and others. The focus of her work is on spiritual dances, and skills developed include relationship of steps to rapid polyrhythmic percussion, choreography, and vocal expressions. Participants learn to dance together in an environment that promotes self-esteem and confidence, and all ages and skill levels are invited.
Here in the United States she has participated with a variety of Cuban folklore groups, including Alafia, Obakosó, Raíces Afrocubanas, Owo Aché, Batacongo, and Conjunto Folklórico Novato. She has appeared in the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival three times, and twice in San Francisco Carnaval, and reviews of her performances have been featured in the SF Weekly and the San Francisco Chronicle.
